An abbreviated system is a way of playing systems entries at a drastically reduced cost while still offering certain guarantees should you correctly forecast the six winning numbers. Generally they guarantee that if the six winning numbers are amongst your chosen numbers you will get 5 in at least one game plus numerous 4 number pays. The way this is done is as follows. For the ease of explanation we will assume that the 6 winning numbers are 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 – 6. If we were to break these numbers down into combinations of five different numbers we would find that there are six different combinations:

As you can see, just one set of six numbers can be broken down into six seperate combinations of five numbers and therein lies the secret to abbreviated lottery systems. Let me demonstrate further using a standard system 8 entry. When we play a system 8 entry we are actually covering 28 separate combinations of 6 numbers. So if we were to assume that our 8 chosen numbers are 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8 (remember these can be any numbers of your choosing) the combinations would be as follows:

So how do we ensure that we get at least one 5 number pay regardless of which of the above combinations are drawn? Well this is very easy. Firstly starting at the top of the list the first combination we see is 1-2-3-4-5-6. This is the first combination we play on our standard lotto coupon (note: we are using standard coupons not systems). We then go down the list and eliminate any combinations that include 5 of these numbers. We would then be left with these combinations:

As you can see, if any of the combinations we have eliminated were the drawn numbers we would have five of them simply by playing one combination 1-2-3-4-5-6.
To select the next combination to play on our standard coupon we simply use the next combination that has not been deleted, that being 1-2-3-4-7-8. Now, as before we go down the list and eliminate any combinations that include five of these numbers. The list would then look like this:

This leaves us with just one combination 3-4-5-6-7-8 and this is the last combination we play. So as you can see, no matter which of the possible 28 combinations is drawn we would be guaranteed a five number pay by playing just 4 games.

Of course if your eight chosen numbers were 36, 13, 12, 40, 7, 23, 5 and 26, the four combinations you would play are:

So that is how abbreviated systems are compiled. The same method is applied to determine which combinations to play regardless of if you choose to play a system 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 or for that matter, any other system. Of course when you get into bigger systems which have hundreds or even thousands of combinations this method can become very time consuming. Now, don’t despair because I have already done all the work for you. In coming posts you will find abbreviated systems for 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 numbers. It is of course possible to create these methods for systems 13 through 45 using the above method however, to keep the playing cost to a minimum I have chosen to stop at system 12.
